Building Materials 1

 

Introduction

Building Materials is a subject where we learn the different types of materials available in the construction industry. We not only learn the properties of it but also the application of the material in construction. It was indeed a very interesting subject for me because I never knew of the existence of some of the materials used. Besides that, this subject would also come useful for me to understand the Measurement subject.

 

 

Assignment 1

For our first assignment, we were grouped in groups of four. Each group was given a topic on a material for example plastic, metal, glass or wood, and we had to do a research on it. From what we have found we were asked to do a presentation based on our research. This assignment made me understand more on the material that I was assigned to. My group did on the material stone. It brought many benefits to me as my knowledge on stones was very shallow before this. Now my understandings on this material have increased. It was also a good training as I got to improve my presentation skills while presenting this assignment to the entire class.

 

 

Assignment 2

For the second assignment, we were also grouped into groups of four. We were assigned to pick a building or a place and conduct a research on the material used in that particular building. The building that we and my group mates chose was Nando’s Restaurant. We were also asked to do a comparison between branches that is why we chose the restaurants in Sunway Pyramid and also Paradigm. This project was interesting because we had to analyse the materials used in the restaurant and how it is applied. To our surprise, we could understand how some materials are actually used in a building. Applications like finishes and frame structures can be done with many various materials.

 

 

 

 

Assignment 3

This second assignment was a site visit report assignment. It was a rather fun and great experience carrying out this assignment as we went into an actual site for the report. Our lecturer arranged a site visit for us to the Symphony Hills housing estate located in Cyberjaya. It was interesting because we got to see and understand more from what we learned in class. Form this visit I got the chance to understand the construction industry better. With that knowledge I could apply it in my future undertakings. From the whole visit, we were supposed to come up with a report. The report could be found in the attachment below.
