Site Surveying

Introduction

Site surveying is an inspection of an area where work is proposed, to collect data for a design or an estimation to fulfill the initial tasks required for construction activity. Site surveying is basically measuring the horizontal and slope distance, vertical distances, and horizontal and vertical angles of a chosen site. The purpose of surveying is to collect data, which later can be plotted to scale on a plan or map, or to lay out dimensions taken from a design plan and thus defined precisely.

Assignment 1

The first assignment given was about leveling. We were required to produce a report with the data that we had collected. It was a group assignment made up of 4 group members assigned by the lecturer. The leveling activity was being carried out at the car park area of Taylor's University. we had hands on experince witht the leveling machine as we had to set it up and get the reading by ourselves. It was a tough challenge because it had to be done under the hot weather. At the end, we managed to produce a report based on the data collected. The assignment help me to understand the subject better for instance the rise and fall method to calculate the error for the leveling done.

Assignment 2

The second assignment was to again produce a report based on the angle measurement using a theodolite conducted at the Taylor's Lakeside car park. Instruments used was a tripod stand, a theodolite and two ranging rods. This assignment involves the observation of angles, direction and lengths, putting into practice all the theories and methods that we have learnt in the lecture classes. Conducting this assignment again enabled us to have additional hands-on experience with the theodolite equipment used in surveying. It was really a great experience conducting the assignment.
